The Family History of Sonny’s Transfer Moving & Storage

Founded in 1981 in Cumberland, MD, by Forest “Sonny” Morris, Jr.

The family history of Sonny’s Transfer Moving & Storage starts with Forest, also known as “Sonny,” and his wife, Norita Morris. The couple founded the company in 1981. Sonny began moving furniture for Floyd Thomas Grapes at the age of 14. Through the years, he worked for Homer Grapes Moving Company, City Transfer, Klavuhn Moving, and Mayflower. He served his country and was a proud Marine. He worked as a carman at Chessie System (CSX) until his retirement in 1995 with more than 30 years of service.

Sonny purchased his first moving truck in 1981. His brother, Raymond, also known as “Moe,” and his two sons, Butch and Keith, were the first employees. He purchased his first warehouse for furniture storage in 1983 and the second warehouse in 1987. He was the owner/operator until his death in 2004. His wife, Norita, was his successor until her death in 2022.

Sonny's Transfer Moving & Storage's Legacy Continues as Daughter, Vickie, Assumes Ownership

Sonny’s and Norita’s daughter, Vickie Morris, assumed the business and is the current owner. She is dedicated to keeping the family legacy moving forward with new and innovative ways to make moving more streamlined. The company has two fully equipped moving trucks for local and long-distance needs, as well as a pickup truck for small odd jobs. The office, located at 101 Humbird St., Suite 1, can be reached at (301) 724-7349.

Vickie is no stranger to working in the public eye. She is a graduate of Fort Hill High School in the class of “77.” She became a cosmetologist after attending Scott’s Beauty Academy right out of high school. In 1987, she reeducated herself and received an Associate of Science degree from Allegany Community College as a Medical Laboratory Technologist, ASCP. This was a career change that she needed to raise her sons as a single mother.

In 1997, she accomplished another goal and became a Registered Nurse. This career opened many new pathways and opportunities. She has worked in Telemetry/Respiratory units, HLC and ICU. She spent nearly 12 years working in the Emergency Department locally. She has held multiple positions as Supervisory, Unit Manager and currently is the Assistant Director of Nursing at a local nursing home.
